The Faces Behind Simple Seasonal

rachel of simple seasonalHi, I’m Rachel and welcome to Simple Seasonal – a whole foods blog about making the most of your local farmer’s market or CSA.
By day, I’m a practicing Home Health Nurse in the Philadelphia area. This experience has taught me that the health of myself, my family, and my community is largely affected by the choices we make every day – especially the choices about what we eat. At some point, most of our mothers told us to, “eat your vegetables!” Well, Mom may have been onto something, because study after study concludes that, once again, she was right. With this in mind, I try to practice what I preach as a visiting nurse in order to promote better health – both for myself and my family, I’m proud to carry on the mantra of “EAT YOUR VEGETABLES” in this blog!

dan of simple seasonalHi, I’m Dan. While I mostly work behind the scenes here at Simple Seasonal, I’m a huge fan of well-crafted cocktails and regularly publish recipes with a local and seasonal spin. I’m also lucky enough to be married to Rachel, and therefore the official Simple Seasonal QA tester.
By day, I’m a User Experience Designer in the tech industry, so I work hard to make sure everything flows nicely while you’re interacting with us.

What you will see from Simple Seasonal:

  1. Whole food recipes prepared with seasonal and local ingredients
  2. Plenty of vegetarian and vegan recipes, but also some meaty main courses with pastured meats (of course, assuming that they’ll be enjoyed with a mountain of vegetables)
  3. The occasional dessert or drink recipe that incorporates fruits, vegetables, whole grains, or natural ingredients
  4. A “How To” section with techniques for cooking whole foods
  5. Info and recipes featuring unusual or mysterious produce you may find at your local farmer’s market or CSA
  6. Some canning recipes – because, seriously, you can’t let 6 quarts of perfectly ripe strawberries go to waste!
  7. A celebration of discovering new & nourishing foods that taste amazing!
  8. Finally, lots of love for local farmers – because they do impressive things with dirt and we need them!
Happy Eats!
Rachel & Dan

    Hi Rachel,
I’m Linnaea, a blogger at I Am Gluten Free. Besides my blog, I run a website called Cooked Well (http://www.cookedwell.com/) which features healthy, allergy-friendly recipes from bloggers and organizes the recipes into a searchable format so that people can find the recipe they’re looking for.
Since the website is still in the growth stage, I’ve been going around and asking bloggers if they’d be willing to contribute. To submit a recipe, all you need to do is add a photo, a link to the recipe, and a description of the recipe, not the actual recipe. This means that anyone wanting the recipe will go to your site. Here’s an example of a posted recipe: http://www.cookedwell.com/no-bake-vegan-pumpkin-pie-paleo-friendly-gluten-free/
Judging from the response I’ve had so far, Cooked Well is growing rapidly and will become a good resource for people wishing to find healthy recipes, as well as a place for bloggers to generate some traffic.
I’d really appreciate it if you’d be willing to become a member and submit a recipe or two. I’m looking for healthy recipes that are interesting enough to take the blah out of paleo cooking, and I think that yours might spice things up a little bit! You can join up here: http://www.cookedwell.com/become-a-contributor/
Thanks so much for your time!

Linnaea- Thanks for making me aware of your website! I checked in out and it’s really beautiful and professional! In addition to being a food blogger, I’m a visiting nurse and I’m passionate about the connection between nutrition and the wellness of my community. I also write many of my recipes with Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) farms and local small farms in mind. Thus my recipes are primarily whole foods and many of my recipes are allergy-friendly. I cook for a number of nutritional needs from vegan to paleo, so our content matches well and I’ll be sure to start submitting to your website! I’ll also share a link to your site on my Facebook page as I know a number of my follower would be interested in your content.

    Hi Rachel,

We saw you at the CSA open house on Saturday so I have been rummaging around your recipes. I just read your bio and found it very interesting. Our older son has 3/4 of a degree from BBC (first year was at Cedarville) and his MDIV from Biblical Seminary in Hatfield. Our younger son has 1/2 of his degree (and his wife) from BBC. He finished at Grace College in Winona Lake, IN. His wife has 2 degrees from BBC including a masters in counseling. It is truly a small world!!!
    Lord Bless,
    Dave McClure

Dave McClure- Thanks so much for reaching out! You’ll have to introduce yourself to me at the farm this spring. It’s possible I went to college with one of your kids. BBC was a great experience!

Hi Rachel! I found myself here from your comment on Food Blogger Pro and I am so glad I did! (Sorry I didn’t respond, every time I log in it tells me the thread cannot be found. Not sure what’s up!) I love your recipes and your eating philosophy. I can’t wait to try some of your recipes!

Nora- Thanks for taking a visit to Simple Seasonal. If you weren’t able to read my comment on Food Blogger Pro I basically said that your blog is awesome and that I connected with you on social media like e-mail, Instagram and Pinterest. I’m more of a cook as opposed to a baker, so I’m excited to see what other better-for-you baked goods you come up with!

Ashley- Thanks for the kind words! It’s so cool to meet someone who will be reading my blog. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine my audience and now it just got a little bit easier. I hope to run into you again at Pier 1. You’ll have to let me know if they have any awesome sales on dishware!

Jacquelyn- thanks for pointing that out. The hubs and I are taking our vacation this week, which means extra time to work on the blog from comfy reclining chair on the porch of an ocean front condo. Blogging at its best! We’re going to be making a few changes/improvement to the blog, one of which is a contact page which was just posted! I’ll shoot you an e-mail about the cocktail. 🙂
